Featured Application
Application: Cylinder for Airplane Seating Mechanism
Type of Extrusion: Combination Impact
Material: 6061
Aluminum Alloy
Secondary Operations: Heat Treatment to –T6
temper
Product Features Include:
- Surface Finish inside the cylinder held at or below 64 Ra
- Concentricity kept to .010”, allowing for further CNC machining
- Length to diameter ratio = 7:1
Advantages of the Impact Process Include:
- Lower initial tooling costs than deep draw process
- Lower material costs than spinning / machining from raw stock
- Only process capable of achieving 7:1 length to diameter ratio
- Produces a cylinder with uniform grain structure and no porosity
Application Notes:
The customer performs additional CNC machining
operations to the solid end of the JLO impact cylinder blank. Internal surface
finish promotes a tighter seal and extends the seal’s mean time between
failure (MTBF). Each seating assembly includes one finished part. The customer’s
mechanism design allows for an airplane’s business class seats to “lie
flat”.
